An advocacy group for people with disabilities looking to improve accessibility in the community will hold its first meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23 at the Grandstay Residential Suites, 708 Niagara Ave., Sheboygan.

Options for Independent Living is inviting people with disabilities to attend a get-together to discuss issues, barriers to independence and advocacy activities.

The event is free and open to the public and Light refreshments will be served.

Dinah Chaudoir-Federer of Sheboygan, who is a grassroots advocacy coordinator for Options for Independent Living, which is based in Green Bay, said the meeting is to help develop an advocacy program for people with disabilities in the Sheboygan area.

"It's a new service within Sheboygan County specifically for people with disabilities, giving them a voice," Chaudoir-Federer said. "There hasn't been anything like that here before."

Chaudoir-Federer said there are public buildings and facilities in the area that are not accessible to everyone, and the group can work to raise awareness in the community in a positive way to the needs of people with disabilities.

"We're going to talk about advocacy how it works, how we can work together," she said. "And then define what issues the group wants to work on and meet monthly to talk about how we're going to address these and review what we've done in the last month and that kind of thing."

For more information or to register, contact Chaudoir-Federer at (920) 412-6328 or by email at dinahf@optionsil.org.

SheboyganPress.com
